Indigenous Peoples’ Day

By Haley Cahill-Teubert,

Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day. It is celebrated on the second Monday of October to recognize the American Indian and Indigenous communities who have lived in the U.S. for years.

Sigma Delta Tau acknowledges that our headquarters in Carmel, Indiana sits on the traditional homelands of the Myaamia (now known as the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma), Kaskaskia and Kiikaapoi peoples, ceded in the 1818 treaty, Cession 99. A number of tribes, including Myaamia, still maintain a strong presence within Indiana, while citizens from more than 100 tribes and cultural groups reside throughout the state. By offering this Land Acknowledgement, we affirm Indigenous sovereignty and will work with our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee to better support and meet the needs of our American Indian and Indigenous sisters.
