Happy Founders Day from National President, Debbie Eleftheriou

By SDT Headquarters,

Happy 100th Birthday Sigma Delta Tau! What an amazing time this is in our history, and I am thankful to share it with each of you. We have so much to be proud of as members of SDT! I cannot help but think that our founders would be equally as proud of all that we have accomplished!

As I reflect on our history during this special occasion, I am reminded of the story told by National Founder, Regene Freund Cohane many years ago about each of our founding sisters.  Regene described herself as the “activity girl,” Dora as “the leader,” Amy the “personality plus coed,” and Marian as the “brain.” Grace was the “campus queen,” Inez the “sophisticate” and Lenore was the “idealist.” Each young woman brought something special to SDT, yet all had a desire to experience the bonds of sisterhood that a sorority could provide. Now, 100 years later, I see those same qualities in each of you.

What started as a group of women on the Cornell campus in 1917 has grown to include 64 active chapters and more than 65,000 members. Through our commitment to develop leaders, coupled with our dedication to service and scholastic achievement, SDT truly empowers women across the country. Our members are leaders on their campuses, in their communities and in their professional careers. SDT’s programming continues to mentor and educate women to ensure that each of us is the best we can be. Our commitment to our philanthropic partners is evident through our financial and hands-on support. And, through programming and a partnership with the SDT Foundation, we ensure that our members can achieve academic success. We remain focused on meaningful activities, collaboration with campuses, and ensuring that the ideals of our sisterhood shine through in all that we do!

Like our National Founders, every one of us brings something unique to Sigma Delta Tau. Our individuality and diversity has helped drive what is the SDT of today–strong chapters and engaged collegian and alumnae members. I encourage you to take some time today to reflect on these special women. Which one most resembles you (take our fun online quiz to see)? What mark will you leave on your campus, community and Sigma Delta Tau?

Whatever it is you’re doing today to honor and celebrate this special occasion, I urge you to share a special memory with a sister and to be reminded of the wonderful bonds of sisterhood we all share! Join us on social media (@SigmaDeltaTauHQ, #SDT100), and don’t forget to share your pictures with us! Watch our special video message below for a journey through our past 100 years!

I wish everyone a Happy Founders Day!
