Founders Day Message from Michelle Carlson

By SDT Headquarters,

Dear SDT Sister,

As I reflect on Founder’s Day today, I can’t help but think about what empowered women our founders were 99 years ago. These seven, Jewish, Ivy League women set out to create a sorority for outstanding young women who were willing to take a stand and make a difference. Today, Sigma Delta Tau still seeks out empowered women and continues to empower our sisters through Leadership, Service, Scholarship and Sisterhood.

Empowering Women through Leadership

Our Collegiate Leadership Team (CLT) is comprised of outstanding juniors and seniors from across the country and the National Board of Directors utilize these women as a sounding board to keep our programs relevant to the current collegiate experience.  These amazing women will be leading our leadership development curriculum this summer at Leadership School in New Jersey, June 24-26, 2016. I am extremely proud of the innovative programs we have created in partnership with CLT to empower our sisters through leadership, such as Safe Smart Dating, Life$avingsChapter Leader Days and Alternative Spring Break.

Empowering Women through Service

Sigma Delta Tau is extremely proud of our partnership with Prevent Child Abuse America and the role we have played in helping to keep children safe by donating over $2.2 million and raising awareness across our campuses over the past 34 years. This April, we’re proud to stand with PCAA at two Big Pinwheel Gardens in Washington, D.C., April 9 (see Facebook event page), and New York City, April 12 (see Facebook event page). I will be in Times Square on April 12, and I invite local sisters to join me for this memorable event.  We are also extremely proud of the work with are doing with Jewish Women International to keep all girls and women safe.  Through our Girls Achieve Grapeness nail polish campaign, SDT chapters have raised over $240,000 over the past three years to support JWI’s work to break the cycle of domestic abuse and sexual assault.

Empowering Women through Scholarship

Our Founders would be proud of the academic success Sigma Delta Tau is experiencing nationally. Most of our chapters maintain GPAs in the top three of all sororities on campus. SDT promotes our national scholarship manual, further underscoring the importance of scholarship for our undergraduate sisters. We also provide many scholarships through our SDT Foundation.

Empowering Women through Sisterhood

This semester, I have been so fortunate to share SDT’s message with sisters in South Florida, Atlanta and NYC at our Centennial regional brunches and SDT Girls Night Out in honor of our Founders Day.  It has been truly wonderful to meet SDT sisters from a variety of chapters, representing different regions, ages and chapter experiences, but all sharing a common love for Sigma Delta Tau. SDT will be hosting additional events across the country. Please take a look and join us as we come to a city near you!

Empowering Women since 1917

In honor of our Founders Day on March 25, please join me by participating in the $100 for 100 years campaign benefiting the SDT Foundation. The money raised will be used to fund SDT’s educational and leadership initiatives to empower our women as we approach our 100th anniversary and beyond.

I hope you will reach out today to say Happy Founders Day to one of your very special sorority sisters and save the date for our Centennial Celebration which is just one year away in Times Square, NYC, June 23-25, 2017.

I truly believe the beSDT is yet to come for our sisterhood!
